How is Airflow Calculated? Airflow, also referred to as volumetric flow rate, is the volume of air that moves past a certain point in a given amount of time. It typically measures in cubic feet per minute (CFM) or cubic meters per hour (CMH).
There are two main ways to calculate airflow:
Using the product of air velocity and area:
This is the most common method and applies to situations where you know the air velocity and the cross-sectional area through which the air is flowing.
Here’s the formula:
Airflow (CFM) = Air Velocity (FPM) x Area (ft²)
Airflow (CMH) = Air Velocity (MPM) x Area (m²)
Where:
- CFM – Cubic Feet per Minute (volumetric flow rate)
- CMH – Cubic Meters per Hour (volumetric flow rate)
- FPM – Feet per Minute (air velocity)
- MPM – Meters per Minute (air velocity)
- Area – The cross-sectional area perpendicular to the airflow path (in square feet or square meters)
Using specialized airflow meters:
For more precise measurements, particularly in ductwork, specialized airflow meters uses. These meters measure the air velocity at a specific point, and some models can also calculate the airflow rate based on the duct’s cross-sectional area.
Here are some additional points to consider when calculating airflow:
- Units of measurement: Ensure consistency in the units used for airflow rate (CFM or CMH), air velocity (FPM or MPM), and area (ft² or m²).
- Average air velocity: If the air velocity isn’t uniform across the entire area, an average velocity needs to be determined (e.g., through multiple measurements) for a more accurate calculation.
- Duct size and shape: For ductwork calculations, consider the duct’s specific size and shape (round, rectangular, etc.) to determine the accurate cross-sectional area.
By understanding these methods and considerations, you can effectively calculate airflow in various applications, such as designing ventilation systems, selecting air conditioning equipment, and troubleshooting airflow issues.
