Commercial HVAC system components

Commercial HVAC systems are more complex than residential systems due to the need to heat and cool larger spaces, often with varying temperature requirements. Here are the main components of a commercial HVAC system:

Thermostat:

The thermostat is the control center of the HVAC system, sensing the temperature in a designated area and sending signals to the other components to turn on or off the heating or cooling.

Air conditioner:

The air conditioner cools the air by using a refrigerant to absorb heat from the air and transfer it outdoors. The main components of an air conditioner are:

Compressor:

The compressor is the heart of the air conditioner, using electricity to pressurize the refrigerant.

Condenser:

The condenser is a heat exchanger that releases heat from the compressed refrigerant to the outside air.

Thermal expansion valve:

The thermal expansion valve controls the flow of refrigerant by regulating its pressure.

Evaporator coil:

The evaporator coil absorbs heat from the indoor air as the refrigerant passes through it.

Air handler:

The air handler is a unit that houses the evaporator coil and a blower fan. The blower fan circulates air over the evaporator coil and throughout the building.

Terminal units:

Terminal units are smaller units located throughout a building that distribute conditioned air from the air handler to specific zones. They may include coils, filters, and blowers to further condition and distribute the air.

Chiller (optional):

Chillers are used in large commercial buildings to provide chilled water for air conditioning systems. Chillers work similarly to air conditioners, but they use water as the cooling medium instead of air.

Furnace (optional):

Furnaces are used in commercial buildings to provide heat. They can be fueled by natural gas, oil, or electricity.

Ductwork and ventilation system:

The ductwork is a network of pipes that transport conditioned air throughout the building. The ventilation system provides fresh outdoor air to the building and removes stale indoor air.
